It’s Time to Bust a Few Myths About Volunteering
Time to read: ~ minutes,
“Well I’d really love to volunteer but…” is a common response charities and voluntary groups get when chatting to people about helping them, but those reasons for declining are usually based on misconceptions that stop them from getting involved.
So let’s bust a few of the most common myths.
“I don’t have enough time.” This is one of the biggest barriers people mention, but it rarely reflects the reality of modern volunteering. Many opportunities can fit around busy lives – whether it’s a single event, a few hours at the weekend or even something you can do from home, there’s lots of flexibility. Volunteering doesn’t have to mean a weekly commitment - it can be as little or as often as you choose.
“I’d have to commit long-term.” This myth can put people off before they’ve even explored what’s available. But more organisations offer short-term and “taster” roles than ever before. Seasonal projects, event support, and micro-volunteering are all on the rise, so you can try something out, contribute when you’re able and step back when life gets busy.
“I need special skills or qualifications.” While some roles do need specific expertise, the majority just ask for enthusiasm and a willingness to get on and help. Groups provide training, guidance and ongoing support where needed, so attitude matters far more than any formal qualification.
“Volunteering is unpaid, so it’s not valuable.” Yes, there is no financial recompense but that doesn’t mean there’s no value. Research by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations found 93 per cent of those polled find it enjoyable and rewarding, and 90 per cent feel they make a difference. You can develop skills, boost confidence, build networks and even get experience that could help getting a job.
“There isn’t a role that would suit me.” Wiltshire’s voluntary sector is wonderfully diverse, with opportunities for every interest and ability – befriending, driving, gardening, administration, digital support, the list is endless. It doesn’t matter if you prefer the outdoors, working with people or contributing behind the scenes, there’s almost certainly something to suit you.
“I won’t make a difference.” National Council for Voluntary Organisations research found 90 per cent of volunteers feel they make a difference. They are the backbone of most groups, who rely on volunteers to keep going. Each hour given up contributes to something bigger - and makes a genuine difference to communities.
If any of the above reasons have stopped you from considering volunteering, now might be the perfect time to take that first step. Wiltshire Together, Wessex Community Action’s free community portal, has lots of opportunities to meet most needs.
Volunteer and Community Development Advisor Stacey Sims says: “There are so many brilliant groups with the need for people of all ages, skills and backgrounds, and most are really flexible because they understand the time challenges we all face.
“Just having a conversation with them could open up an opportunity that might change your life.”
