Why I Chose To Become a Charity Trustee – Ali Penny

Time to read: ~ minutes,

Serving as a charity trustee is a role I fulfil with considerable pride and a deep sense of responsibility. It’s a commitment to supporting causes I believe in and making a tangible difference within my community. In this blog, I’d like to share the journey that led me to become a trustee, what the role means to me, and why I believe it’s a rewarding way to give back.

Finding Purpose in Retirement

When I retired from being a SEND Teacher, I felt I had time, skills, and experience that I could use as a volunteer in my community. Charities rely not just on staff and volunteers, but also on committed trustees who support the organisation towards its goals. Becoming a trustee gave me a chance to do something meaningful and impactful. I thoroughly enjoy working with Trowbridge Future and the people we support are full of praise for the service we provide.

Learning and Growing

One of the great joys of being a trustee is the opportunity for personal growth. Trusteeship isn’t just about attending meetings; it’s about listening, questioning, and making collective decisions that shape the charity’s future. As I have recently taken on the role of Chair, I’m learning about leadership, risk management, and the charity sector in general. Board meetings are opportunities to reflect, meet challenges and use creative solutions in unforeseen circumstances. This keeps me engaged and inspired.

Making a Real Difference

At the heart of trusteeship is the commitment to making a difference. As a trustee, I have a direct influence on the outcomes of the charity’s work - from ensuring good governance and legal compliance to championing the voices of community. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the outcomes of our collective decisions reflected in positive changes for those we support. Whether it’s providing services, developing community connections, or supporting innovative projects, being a trustee means playing a crucial role in supporting successes.

Building Meaningful Relationships

Joining a charity board has also connected me with a diverse range of people - fellow trustees, staff, volunteers, and community members - all united by a common purpose. Working collaboratively with others who share a passion for social change is both invigorating and motivating. These relationships are a source of support, inspiration, and shared knowledge, making the experience of trusteeship all the more rewarding.

Taking Action

Ultimately, I chose to become a charity trustee because I wanted to give back in a way that would have real impact. Trusteeship is not without its challenges: it demands time, commitment, and a willingness to take responsibility. But for me, the rewards far outweigh the demands. If you’re considering how to directly contribute in your community, I encourage you to explore trusteeship. It is a unique opportunity to support causes you care about and make an impact.

Being a charity trustee allows me to use the skills I developed over my career to support others. It’s an opportunity I cherish - and one I’d recommend to anyone looking to make a difference in your own life and in the lives of others.
